Humpback whales in glacier bay
Humpback whales are regulars in glacier bay, and they come for the numerous schooling fish found there. They suck in these fish with a 15,000 gallon gulp of water, the same amount an average home uses in 5 months, and filter the fish through their baleen using their
1-ton tongue. When they expel that water at 300mph, the cloudy column of vaporized air can be seen for miles. Glacier Bay is a sanctuary to Humpback Whales, who come their after spending the winter in Hawaii or Mexico. Visitors can often see these 40-50 ft. long giants, who get their name by the way they arch their back before diving, shoot out of the water in either a full body breach, finslap, tail-lobbing, or lunge feeding maneuver. One interesting story is the one of whale 68, know as Snow, who was struck by a ship and killed. There is now a project in full swing to clean, articulate, and display the skeleton.
